This year, for the first time in history, more people are working in service trades than in goods production, according to the United Nations’ International Labor Organization(ILO) this week.
In 1996, agriculture accounted for 42% of world employment, whth another 21% of workers in goods-producing industries and 37% in service. By last year , the ILO reported that 42% were in services, 37% in agriculture, and 22% in industry.
Technology is increasing economic competition in services from banking to tourism and heaithcare. The Internet and air transport now make it as easy to trade services across borders as it is to trade goods.
“Driving a taxi is much easier than working in the fields,” says Brazilian Valdir de Santos, who has gone from farmhand to taxi driver. But all around him he sees low-paying jobs. Many people who move to Sao Paulo, Brazil, simply exchange a rural struggle with poverty for an urban one. The IEO voices similar concerns in its new report. It says many workers in developing countries remain under-used.
Every country will continue to need both low-paying and high-skilled workers. But global incomes may be determined by skill levels in services.
Some economists worry about the change. As services become tradable products, workers will face competition from overseas. Princeton University economist Alan Blinder predicts that providers of “per-sonal services,” from hair stylists to trial lawyers, will be OK. But workers are unprotected in jobs where work doesn’t need to be done near the customer.
For now, most workers in Brazil are simply focused on local realities, not global opportunities.
